History

Argentine Sisters of Mercy founded Adelaide's St Aloysius College in 1880.

Staff and students of SAC visited its sister school, St Ethnea College in 2003. It was on this tour that music teacher Craig Evans was touched by the plight of the poor children in the adjacent shanty towns.

In 2004 Craig returned to Argentina, and with funds raised by SAC staff and students, numerous projects in the 'barrios' were initiated.

Returning from his 5 month stay, Craig was greeted by a whole school community committed to continuing the struggle to improve the conditions for children living in hardship.

Other school communities have since joined, and together the project 'Mercy in Action' has evolved.

How you can help

'Mercy in Action' is committed to improving the lives of the barrios children and invites organisations and schools to join in working to provide educational opportunities and improved living conditions for these silent victims.

St Aloysius College is taking a leading role in raising funds to build, furnish and maintain community centres in these poor communities. Students are able to experience first-hand the difference they have made to the lives of individuals and communities by participating in the biannual missions to Argentina.
