Caritas Just Leadership days
SAC sends up to thirty students each year to Caritas Just Leadership workshops. These workshops are run by Caritas Australia to give school students the opportunity to learn about social justice issues and Caritas projects they can support.
Catherine House
Catherine House provides support and accommodation for homeless women. SAC students actively support its important work. Our Primary school students have an annual Easter egg drive to raise money. Students and their families donate Christmas gifts. |

The Social Justice Group conducts fundraising for special projects such as the publication of “Women’s Words”, poetry and prose written by the women of Catherine House.
Catherine House was established by the Adelaide Sisters of Mercy.
Indigenous issues
Justice for indigenous Australians, many of whom lack clean water, education and basic health care, is an urgent priority.
SAC sends students each year on the Mimili Mutitjulu trek organised by our sister school Mercedes College. The trek provides an opportunity for education and respectful exchange with indigenous communities in Central Australia.
The Social Justice Group supports specific needs for indigenous prisoners, as requested by Nunkuwarrin Yunti Health Centre. Justice leaders organise student activities for National Sorry Day. |

International Café
Our Primary classes organise an International Café each year to promote respect of other cultures. International food and drink are made by families and sold at lunchtime. Funds go to Mercy charities.
International Day of Peace
On 21 September each year we celebrate the International Day of Peace. The Social Justice Group has lunchtime activities and fundraising. |

Landmines Campaign
Students support this campaign through:
- awareness raising activities
- petitions and political lobbying
- fundraising for wheelcchairs and prostheic limbs for victims of landmines.

Sr Particia Pak-Poy RSM AO, a former student and Principal of SAC was awarded the ANZAC Peace Prize by the RSL, and the 2002 Human Rights Award by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission in recognition of her efforts on behalf of the victims of landmines and the campaign to ban landmines internationally. SAC students support her work.
Mercy Day
On the last day of Term 3 we celebrate Mercy Day with Mass followed by a Mercy Day Carnival. This is an opportunity to celebrate our history and support Mercy projects, especially the Moore Street Day Centre. |

Mercy in Action & Argentina Mission
“Mercy in Action” is a foundation established by SAC teacher Craig Evans to support projects for children in poor communities (barrios) in Buenos Aires. SAC students support the project with fundraising and sales of silver jewellery and woven bracelets. Every two years students are given the opportunity to undertake a mission to Argentina to visit our sister school, St Ethnea. During the visit our students actively contribute to the work of the Mercy in Action foundation by renovating community centres and undertaking educational activities with the pre-school children in the barrios. |

Moore Street Day Centre
The Moore Street Day Centre is supported by our students.
A Can Drive is held each year and students give gifts at Christmas time. Year 9 students donate produce and hampers.
The Moore Street Day Centre was established by Sr Janet Mead, a former student and teacher at SAC. |

Project Compassion
SAC proudly supports this major annual campaign of Caritas Australia. Primary and Secondary students make and sell pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. Our Social Justice Group organises stalls, competitions and special lunchtime activities throughout Lent.. |

Refugees
On International Refugee Day, SAC hosts a multicultural interschool forum. Young refugee students are invited to share their experiences and students discuss ways in which they can support refugees in schools and local communities. |

Year 11 Social Justice Studies and Retreat
All Year 11 students complete a Social Justice unit as part of their Religious Education program. A one day retreat launches this unit in Term 2. |

Student initiatives
Individual students are encouraged to take action on issues about which they feel personally concerned. Students have received assistance in responding to events in South East Asia, in Beslan and to local projects of special interest. |

Women’s issues
Student leaders support:
- the UNIFEM International Women’s Day breakfast each year
- Catherine House projects
- the Campaign to Stop Violence Against Women.

Young Mercy Justice Tree (YMJIT)
The YMJIT is an initiative of the Sisters of Mercy from the Southern Seas region of Australia. Student representatives from the 21 Mercy schools in the region meet three times a year in Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne to exchange ideas and support each other as justice leaders. |
