From the Principal - Issue #4, 2025

Principal
Dear Parents/Guardians, Friends & Students of SAC,
Whilst furthering opportunities for girls and young women through education defines our purpose at SAC every day, International Womenโs Day and the surrounding events cast light on gender equality and the status of women in todayโs world. A recent research project led by Deputy Principal, Jacqui Jury, took a deep dive into the stories of our founding sisters. Journeying from Argentina to Adelaide in 1880, these women embodied courage and determination in their commitment to changing the lives of women in the early years of South Australia (to read more about their stories click here). This enduring legacy underpins the work of the staff of the College today, who remain committed to empowering women to embrace their future with passion and confidence.

To recognise International Womenโs Day at SAC this year, students wore purple ribbons and were invited to contribute to a collage of photos of women who inspire them. They have also written quotes and tributes to display throughout the school. SRC Representatives and First Nations students gathered in the Catherine McAuley auditorium this morning to link in with thousands of women across the state to the IWD Breakfast at the Convention Centre and hear from Rachel Perkins. Students also participated in a March Forward for Women, led by the Drum Corps, in line with the UN Women theme for 2025.

Thanks to the many First Nations families, new and continuing, who joined us yesterday evening for our Yarn BBQ. It was lovely to hold this event at The Wardlis this year, a space designed by First Nations students and staff in collaboration with artist Cedric Varcoe and architect Peter Moeck to recognise and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families in the centre of the campus. We know that the students enjoy catching up with one another and staff appreciate the opportunity to learn from and with our First Nations families.

SAC has welcomed students from a number of Japanese schools in the first half of Term 1. Whilst the length of their visits vary depending on the school, the strength of relationships formed between the visitors and their SAC โbuddiesโ remains a constant. So many students keep in touch after their return, and study tours have inspired many of our students and their families to visit Japan. Intercultural learning is an important aspect of the international dimension of an education at SAC, as we educate global thinkers prepared to take on the world as graduates! We are grateful for the relationships that exist between SAC and St Capitanio, Mejiro Kenshin, Sundai Kofu, Mita International, Yokohama Futaba and Tokyo Joshi, and we look forward to our continued connection.

This week we marked the beginning of the Churchโs season of Lent with Ash Wednesday liturgies in every class. We heard that the ashes on our forehead encourage us to share compassion with others and remind us of the needs of those who struggle. In our liturgies, we considered ways in which we can act to best serve them. I am so proud of the myriad ways in which SAC students seek to help others, often with little or no public recognition, and I am grateful for the everyday acts of kindness that take place in our school. As we enter this Easter season, we are challenged to live and act with love and hope for the world, especially in this jubilee year.

Australian students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual National Assessment Program โ Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests in Reading, Writing, Conventions of Language (spelling, grammar, punctuation) and Numeracy. Students will undertake all tests online, except for the Year 3 Writing test, which will be completed on paper.
NAPLAN tests will commence on Wednesday 12 March. Most students will complete all test domains between 12 โ 17 March. If students are absent for tests, they will be able to complete catch-up tests during the NAPLAN testing window: Wednesday 12 March โ Friday 21 March.
From 2023, there were significant changes to the way that NAPLAN results are reported to parents. The numerical NAPLAN bands and the national minimum standard were replaced with the following 4 levels of achievement:
- Exceeding
- Strong
- Developing
- Needs additional support
Further information about how results will be reported can be accessed here: NAPLAN - Proficiency level descriptions
The recent NAPLAN practice test provided students with an opportunity to experience the test environment. Students and parents can also visit the NAPLAN Public Demonstration Site to explore the types of questions they may experience in each of the four test domains.
It is important that students come to school each day with their device fully charged and a set of wired headphones (not wireless, e.g. air pods). For students who do not have headphones, we have a limited supply of spare sets that can be borrowed.
The test schedule appears below, please note that the lesson time allocated also includes preparation (logging on to the NAPLAN browser, testing headphones etc.) and time for finalising the test sessions.

An Unforgettable Music Camp
The recent Music Camp for our secondary Music ensembles, held at the picturesque Nunyara in Belair, was a resounding success. Over 100 enthusiastic students attended the two-day camp, making it a memorable weekend filled with music, camaraderie, and fun.
Throughout the camp, students dedicated themselves to intensive rehearsals, honing their skills and preparing for upcoming performances. The weekend also provided ample opportunities for students to bond and create lasting friendships. A highlight of the weekend was the games evening, expertly organized by our Senior Music Leaders. The event was a hit, with students enjoying a variety of fun activities.
"We had a great time on Music Camp, and it was a terrific opportunity to make new friends with both younger and older students, as well as make progress in our ensembles. We found this experience significant to our musical learning, particularly as we got to practice our performance skills in a mini concert to our peers at the end of camp. Overall, Music Camp is one of the highlights of being a music student at SAC." Isabel, Gislene and Katherine โ Year 11
"Music camp was lots of fun! We worked hard and furthered our knowledge of music in our ensembles but also made new friends and spent time together. We enjoyed showcasing our talents and watching other ensembles perform, as well as participating in the games night, with the costume parade, quiz, and movie." Daisy, Imogen and Sammyโ Year 11

Old Scholars in the Spotlight
Nia Phillips (Class of 2024) has recently performed in the award-winning Celestial Gardens: The Secret Sound of Plants and was invited to sing for The Governor of South Australia, Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC as part of the event.
โIt was an honour to meet and perform for Her Excellency. She was so lovely to talk to and her interest in art, experience and the natural world is so inspiringโ, Nia says.
Nia introduced The Governor to Otanical VR, and performed renditions of Hallelujah and Summertime that resounded through the picturesque grounds of Carrick Hill.
โEverything I learnt at St Aloysius College taught me life lessons. Being in the Musicals and performing with various ensembles, prepared me for being in professional productions and to be able to accept opportunities like this to perform solo. Iโm so grateful for the community, nurture and education offered at St Aloysiusโ, Nia says.

โSinging and performing allow me to find new levels of joy through expressing myself and connecting to my passion.โ
The wonderworld that was Celestial Gardens: The Secret Sound of Plants was another successful Adelaide Fringe act, with the gardens transform into a captivating landscape of roving performers, interactive plant music, sculptures, and live music. Nature and art meet, with plants revealing their hidden melodies through biodata technology.

Sara Boksmati, another recent SAC graduate from the Class of 2024, is not only performing but also serving as the Musical Director forย Bloom, along with fellow old scholar, Kate Lewis (Class of 2015). This inspiring showcase features music, comedy, and more, highlighting the talents of our community's youth.ย Bloomย celebrates their growth, unique voices, and perspectives, offering a platform for them to share what truly matters to them. The event will be staged at Gluttony, with performances on March 21, 22, and 23.

We are incredibly proud of our old scholars who are showcasing their talents at this year's Adelaide Fringe and other local events. Their dedication, creativity, and passion for music have always been evident, and it is truly rewarding to see them flourish on a wider stage. We wish them all the best and encourage everyone to support their performances. Their achievements are a testament to the vibrant and nurturing musical environment we strive to cultivate at our school.

Primary school students celebrated Shrove Tuesday by enjoying some pancakes with their class on March 4. Traditionally during Lent, Christians would give up rich foods such as butter, eggs and sugar. Shrove Tuesday was the last chance to eat these foods โ and what better way to do so than with a delicious pancake! Thank you to all families who donated pancake mix and toppings. A special thank you to the parent volunteers who helped to cook the pancakes during the morning. The Primary JAM Leaders loved being able to donate our extra toppings to the Adelaide Day Centre in Moore St.
The following day, students marked the beginning of Lent with an Ash Wednesday Liturgy on March 5. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Churchโs season of Lent. The marking of the ashes on our foreheads on this day is a public expression of our faith and humility. It is a time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Lent prepares us for the season of Easter, the most important time in the Churchโs calendar. By praying, fasting and giving alms, we are reminded of Jesusโ death and resurrection. All Primary classes received a Caritas Australia Project Compassion box to assist with the collection of donations during Lent. Families are welcome to donate online through our fundraiser page. The theme of Project Compassion for 2025 is โUnite Against Povertyโ and reminds us that the good we do today impacts the lives of generations to come. Project Compassion boxes with monetary donations can be brought back to school after Easter along with the tab attached inside the box completed with the requested information. For further information about Project Compassion or if you would like to donate online, please visit the Caritas Australia website at: www.caritas.org.au/project-compassion.

International Womenโs Day
On March 8 each year, we #MarchForward, celebrating International Womenโs Day! We reflect with gratitude on women whoโve paved the way for progress so that we can enjoy the freedoms and rights that we have, while acknowledging there is still a way to go to achieve equity for all. Lunchtimeโs festivities were something to remember, with our Drum Corps leading a musical #MarchFoward, which many students keenly joined!

Green Thumbs put to Work
On Friday Week 5, many students helped to re-plant our garden beds with flowers and herbs. Through nurturing this small patch of our own backyard, students will enjoy seeing growth flourish, and how nature rewards our efforts. The garden beds will beautify our shared space and help to foster community spirit. Next time youโre near the Mitchell Courtyard, take a peek at the progress!

Harmony Day

Harmony Week is celebrated Australia-wide, in recognition of the enormous benefits that multiculturalism offers our society. Dozens of nationalities are represented amid our SAC community, and we are looking forward to celebrating this in Week 8.
We are excited to welcome back Gemma Sisia, Founder of the School of St Jude in Tanzania, to SAC during Harmony Week. Gemma will be speaking at the College on the March 20 from 7-8:30pm, sharing inspiring tales with two of St Judeโs alumni, John Stanley and Winnie Nemes, to celebrate 23 years of fighting poverty through education. Our Year 12 cohort sponsors a scholarship for a Year 2 student at St Jude's named Angel. Tickets to meet Gemma, John and Winnie are free, but registration is necessary. Follow this link to book: https://www.trybooking.com/CYZRM
Further Harmony Day activities will be announced via SEQTA notices in the coming week! We invite all students wishing to participate in Harmony Day activities to attend JAM next Friday to finalise plans for what is sure to be an exciting celebration, or email [email protected] with specific ideas for celebrating this national event.

Cultural Exchange in Action
Japanese short-term international students,ย Akari andย Aika, from 10NR (Ms Romanelli and Mr Frezzaโs home class), gave a wonderful presentation on Japanese culture. They shared insights into traditions, customs, and daily life in Japan, engaging their classmates with interesting facts. As part of their presentation, they also led an interactive origami session, demonstrating the art of paper folding and teaching their peers how to create different origami figures. Their presentation was both educational and enjoyable, fostering cultural exchange and appreciation among students. It was a great opportunity for everyone to learn more about Japanese culture firsthand.

GLOW AND TELL - An Interactive Light-filled Storytelling Adventure

Blending the magic of light and simplicity of storytelling, our Year 3 students were placed at the centre of this engaging interactive experience right here at SAC. Using UV light in a custom-built tent, the classroom was transformed into an intimate performance space where stories and imagined worlds came alive as glowing drawings appeared on the walls and floor. Following the performance, students created and illustrated their own stories in glowing UV light on the walls and floor of the tent.
Our performer, Evyenia Stefanidis (Greek) shared a unique story exploring themes of family and culture and it was loved by all our students.
Students reflected:
"The lady told us a story using glow sticks. It was very mysterious at first but so much fun!" โ Arsema 3IF
"It was amazing to see all the special effects being used." โ Taylor 3IF
"It was very dark which made the glow sticks shine and we could create whatever you wanted." โ Anayah 3IF
"I like that we got to talk about ourselves and we got to be creative." โ Tallulah 3SC
"I really enjoyed the Glow and Tell and I loved the experience when we got to draw with light pens." โ Yelinsa 3SC
"I really had lots of fun drawing with the light and it looked cool when you drew and when you could use your hand and the light to make a shadow." โ Zartasha 3SC
"I thought it was really cool because you can draw on the walls and floor, also you can be creative. I believe that you can draw what you love. You can tell your story to others." โ Veronika 3SC
