From the Principal - Issue #15, 2025

Ms Paddy McEvoy
Principal

The Father’s Day Breakfast was a great celebration last week, and we were grateful that so many dads, grandpas and significant men in the lives of our students made time to come along. The primary choir sang from the heart, and there was a lot of love in the room. Special thanks to Jacqui Mcilroy and the Year Level Coordinators for hosting, and to Doreen Maiello and the Front Office staff who came in extra early to prepare and cook the pancakes. We appreciate the partnership between home and school, and we know it is central to helping young people to thrive.

The learning conversations that took place on Monday were another example of staff, students and families working together to improve outcomes for young people. As I chat to parents in the corridors, it is clear that they are incredibly grateful for their daughter’s teachers, and the ways in which they go above and beyond for them. Thank you to the many parents who attended these meetings.

Whilst Athletics Day began with a few showers, the sunshine broke through as the girls were warming up with their health hustle! Students from Reception to Year 12 were actively participating in the day’s events, from novelties to competitive track and field. Days like this are only possible with the support of the staff, and special thanks must go to Nicole Wedding and the PE team for their excellent coordination of the day.

Last Friday was an opportunity for staff to step back, take some time and reflect on the work that we do together at SAC. Centred around our theme, Pilgrims of Hope - Walking Together, it was a joy to spend the Staff Spirituality Day with colleagues in beautiful Nunyara, Belair. We were inspired by the words and music of Clare Bowditch, who reminded us of how creativity can sustain us in uncertain times. There was a chance to walk in Belair National Park, take part in some yoga, knit Blankets of Love, build Solar Buddy Lights and many more activities connected to our Mercy mission. The day closed with a liturgy, reminding us that faith underpins hope, a hope that never disappoints. Thanks to Genevieve Pelekani and Sarah Kennedy for creating such a wonderful day for staff.

The Mock Trial Grand Final between SAC and Seymour College on Tuesday night was a nerve-wracking experience for those of us sitting in the audience. Debating the legality of a mobile phone contract led both teams down numerous rabbit holes, and in the end, Seymour was awarded the win. Congratulations to this group of students, who were winners last year and runners up this year. Special thanks to Lucyna Zwolski and Linda Sarunic, who have guided and encouraged the girls for two seasons. The strong sense of connection between the students and staff was tangible and it has been a brilliant learning experience for all involved.

The Town Hall came alive last night with the sounds of the SAC Music Department. More and more students are getting involved in the huge range of ensembles performing in every musical genre. This participation has been bolstered by the String and Brass Immersion Programs, and most significantly, students are drawn to be part of this vibrant Music Department by the wonderful teachers, support staff and instrumental tutors. This team of passionate educators, led by Fiona Turner, are continuing to develop a love of Music at SAC, and the more than 200 students who performed last night are evidence of their success.

Confidence and character carried SAC students to the annual Frayne Speech Festival

On Friday 29 August, St Aloysius joined 12 other Mercy Schools at the annual Frayne Speech Festival.  This year the event was held at Sacred Heart College, Kyneton, Victoria.  Accompanied by teachers Ms Lucy Combe and Ms Lucyna Zwolski, students competed in debating and public speaking.

The Year 10 debating team – Saachi, Leila, and Gianna – proudly represented SAC with enthusiasm, confidence, and distinction. They competed in two debates: first as the negative team, arguing that water restrictions should be reintroduced in metropolitan Melbourne to address long-term drought risks. Despite presenting a strong case, they narrowly lost by just one point. In their second debate, they took the affirmative position that the VCE should be replaced with a more flexible, skills-based assessment system, which they convincingly won by three points.

The students were commended for their thorough preparation, teamwork, and the clarity with which they delivered their arguments. Their effective rebuttals, persuasive language, and fluency were also highly praised.

Through this experience, the team not only represented St Aloysius with integrity but also gained valuable insights into debating under different rules. The competition provided an opportunity for them to further develop their confidence, broaden their skills, and strengthen their character.

Students commented:

“The Frayne Speech Festival was a great experience that strengthened my debating skills and encouraged me to engage with topics beyond my comfort zone. I especially valued observing the strengths of fellow debaters and thought the voice choirs were great fun to see!”  Gianna

"Feeling so inspired and grateful after spending two days in Melbourne at the Frayne Speech Festival. I loved meeting new people, hearing diverse  voices and ideas, and challenging myself in the competition. I'm super proud of my team and feeling so motivated and eager to continue developing my speaking skills." Leila

"I enjoyed hearing the voices of other students in Australia, and I was intrigued by the nuance and depth of their speeches." Sarah

Year 11, Mazabeen (Sarah) represented SAC in the public speaking section of the competition with an illuminating speech based on the notion, History Has its Eyes on Us.  Sarah used this prompt to discuss the importance of encouraging more young people from South Asian Australian backgrounds to study Humanities and the Arts.  The adjudicator was so impressed that she suggested Sarah send her speech in the form of a letter to The Hon Jason Clare, Federal Minister for Education!

Celebrating Faith, Service, and Community Together

On Tuesday 9 September, our school participated in the annual Catholic Charities Thanksgiving Mass & Charity Expo, a beautiful celebration of faith, service, and community. The Senior Choir led the congregation in song during the Mass at St Francis Xavier's Cathedral, with the Year 8 cohort and Year 6 JAM (Justice and Mercy) Leaders attending the Mass as well.

Following the Mass, the JAM Leaders took part in a Catholic Charities Expo, joining students from other Catholic schools across the region. The expo showcased the many ways schools support Catholic Charities throughout the year. Students explored interactive stalls hosted by various Catholic agencies, learning about the incredible work being done to support those in need - locally and globally.

Our JAM Leaders returned with fresh ideas and renewed passion for justice and mercy, ready to bring new initiatives to our school community.

“It was a fun, educational experience learning about all the Catholic Charities schools like us help through all our fundraising” Isla

"I enjoyed hearing from other schools about all the initiatives they run to raise money for Catholic Charities" Grace

Behind the Mics with Professor Steer

Our Year 8 Digital Technology students had the incredible opportunity to interview Professor Mike Steer, Executive Director of SARDI (South Australian Research and Development Institute), for their class podcast!

Professor Steer shared his expert insights into the current algal bloom affecting South Australian beaches, explaining the science behind what’s happening, how the bloom is being monitored, and the impact it has on our marine environment and local communities.

Our students asked thoughtful, well-researched questions and were genuinely inspired by the conversation, especially learning how science and digital technologies are used together to protect our coastlines.

A huge thank you to Professor Steer for generously giving his time and knowledge, and to our students for showing such curiosity and enthusiasm. The full podcast episode will be available soon, so stay tuned!

A Night at the Opera

Recently, a group of our Music students had the remarkable opportunity to attend the final dress rehearsal of The Magic Flute, presented by the State Opera of South Australia. For many, it was their first time experiencing a live opera — and the evening proved to be both inspiring and unforgettable.

Mozart’s beloved work was brought to life through expressive vocal performances, a vibrant orchestral accompaniment, and visually stunning staging. The production’s imaginative costumes and theatrical atmosphere captivated the students, offering a rare glimpse into the world of professional opera.

“On Tuesday night, we had the opportunity to watch The Magic Flute, an opera composed by Mozart. This was a unique experience that allowed us to enjoy powerful singing and live orchestral music. The costumes, staging, and atmosphere made it unlike any other performance we had seen before. It was a memorable evening that gave us a greater appreciation for classical music and the art of opera.”
Daisy Lewis

On Tuesday evening, we had the privilege of attending a rehearsal of The Magic Flute, originally composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This experience was both educational and inspiring, deepening our understanding and appreciation of classical and operatic music. It was a rare and invaluable opportunity to observe professional musicians at work in a genre that is relatively unfamiliar to us.
Isabel Butler and Gislene Nijenahagera

This excursion not only introduced students to the grandeur and artistry of opera, but also broadened their musical perspectives. It encouraged them to listen more attentively, think more deeply, and engage with music in new and meaningful ways.

Our Students’ Voices Reach Beyond School

We are proud to celebrate Sophie (Year 3), Amaya (Year 3), Aleesha (Year 3), and Anuki (Year 8), who have been part of the South Australian Children’s Choir (SACC) since 2024. Their dedication to music recently took them beyond the classroom, performing for national and international dignitaries at the Australian American Leadership Dialogue in Adelaide.

Their renditions of “I Am Australian” and “I Still Call Australia Home” at the Adelaide Town Hall were met with widespread praise, showcasing their talent and commitment. We are thrilled to see their school musical journey leading to such remarkable achievements.

Check out the official pictures on the SACC website and watch clips on their Facebook page below. You can also visit the AALD website to get a sense of the event.

We are thrilled to celebrate Emma’s incredible achievements in artistic roller skating. On July, Emma won a gold medal at the Artistic Roller Skating National Championships, earning her selection to represent Australia in Junior Ladies Free skating at the World Championships this October in Beijing – truly, "a dream come true" in her own words.

Emma has also recently represented both her club and Australia at the Oceania Championships and the Pacific Cup in Brisbane, where she secured another gold medal. Her dedication, talent, and passion for the sport are an inspiration to us all, and we cannot wait to cheer her on as she competes on the world stage.

Exploring Energy with Marshmallow Catapults!

The Year 8 students have been investigating the science of energy transformation this term through an engaging STEM activity, designing and testing their own marshmallow catapults. Using simple classroom materials, they explored how small changes in design can affect how far and accurately a marshmallow can be launched.

This activity highlighted important physics concepts in an accessible way. Pulling back a spoon, elastic band, or balloon stores elastic potential energy, which is then converted into kinetic energy as the marshmallow is released and set into motion. Students also observed how gravity and air resistance influenced the marshmallow’s path, connecting their hands-on experiments to the scientific principles of motion and force. Activities like this not only make learning interactive and fun but also deepen students’ understanding of how energy is transferred and transformed in everyday situations.

Our Visit to Government House

"Last Thursday, we had the privilege of attending Government House to meet Her Excellency, the Honourable Frances Adamson and her husband Mr Rod Bunten. We were able to converse with other student leaders from various schools across South Australia, and hear from Minister for Education, Blair Boyer. Upon our arrival we learnt that the residence houses Her Excellency and Mr Bunten, and is the oldest continuously occupied Government House in Australia, established in 1840.
The experience provided us with a closer look at the ceremonial and community role of the Governor, but also a chance to appreciate the work and compassion of leaders from around the state and the amazing initiatives each have presented to their schools in the final year of our schooling education. As we come to the end of our captaincy, we are grateful to be recognised amongst the other school leaders who have and will continue to create positive change in our community."

Masterplan Update!

Reaching New Heights: Dunlevie Building Tops Out!

It has been a productive last few weeks on site as we have officially “topped out” the new Dunlevie Building with the rooftop slab completed last week. It is quite the view from the top floor and we’re sure the rooftop play space and terrace areas will be a favourite amongst students both for learning and break times.

This is a significant milestone in the project - Schiavello and the College are very pleased with the progress of the building being on schedule despite some wet weather of late.

While we have been busy looking up, exciting developments have also been taking place inside the building and especially on the ground floor. The expanse of the interior is being appreciated as the drawings come to form, with the ground floor now wall framed, first fix services completed and gyprock now being installed.

Over coming weeks, we will see wall framing and first fix construction across the first and second floors and more of the precast being installed across the levels.
