The Power of Words: Luka Lesson Inspires Year 12s
Year 12 students warmly welcomed poet Luka Lesson for a performance and conversation about the power of words and poetry. Luka is a poet from Brisbane who writes and performs poems focused on issues of justice as well as his family and Greek heritage.
A student favourite was his performance of ‘Yiayia’, a poem about his grandmother.
Our students had lots of questions to ask about Luka’s creative process, which he answered with loads of detail, humility and humour. He encouraged our students to use their own voices, ending with performances of two poems calling them to action: ‘Antidote’ and ‘May Your Pen Grace the Page’.
“…”Live by the word, die by the word”
Which also means – Live by the sword, die by the sword.
Because your tongue is the Excalibur
stuck in the rock of your mouth.
Most of us spend our whole lives trying to pull it out.”
-from Antidote by Luka Lesson
