Inspiring Art Adventure at the Tarnanthi Festival

Recently, Ms Gibson’s Year 7 Art class took part in an inspiring excursion to the Tarnanthi Festival – Too Deadly: Ten Years of Tarnanthi. This major exhibition celebrates the richness and diversity of contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, showcasing works from artists across Australia.

Students were struck by the scale and ambition of many of the pieces. Entire rooms were transformed by immersive installations, including large multi-screen digital artworks and impressive sculptural displays that invited viewers to step inside the artists’ stories and perspectives. The experience offered students a unique opportunity to see how contemporary First Nations artists are pushing creative boundaries and using new technologies to express powerful cultural narratives.

The students also engaged in a studio experience exploring the work of Layne Dhu-Dickie. They created circular images as ‘paste ups’ to add to a collaborative artwork about personal superpowers. It was a meaningful and memorable experience that deepened students’ understanding of contemporary Indigenous art while encouraging them to express their own creative voices.
