Celebrating Christmas with Tradition: Year 8 Students Explore the Story of Santons and French Culture!

Year 8 French students immersed themselves in French Christmas culture yesterday! These clay figures are symbol of Catholic resistance in France to a mandate handed down after the French Revolution; the principle of laïcité, or separation of Church and State. Creating a crèche (or nativity scene) in their home during the Christmas season was a way of showing their continued faith in God and celebrating the Nativity privately. Les Santons continue to be an important part of French culture today, particularly in Provence.
