Exploring Plant Adaptations at the Botanic Garden

Our Year 5 students had a fantastic day exploring the Adelaide Botanic Garden as part of their Science learning on plant adaptations. Throughout the excursion, students participated in an engaging Plant Adaptations Trail, guiding them through a range of unique environments including rainforests, wetlands, and arid landscapes.

Along the way, they examined how different plants have evolved to survive in challenging conditions, from waxy leaves designed to reduce water loss, to spines that protect against predators, to towering root systems that help access nutrients deep in the soil. Students worked collaboratively, recorded observations, sketched plant features, and asked thoughtful questions that extended their understanding.

The experience brought their classroom learning to life and encouraged curiosity, teamwork, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world. A wonderful day of discovery and hands-on learning at one of Adelaide’s most beautiful outdoor classrooms!
