Walking on Kaurna Land

Walking on Kaurna Land

Year 3 students ventured around the city visiting significant places to Indigenous Australians as part of their learning in HASS this term. From Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga (place of the Red Kangaroo dreaming) to Elder Park, these young historians followed the footsteps of the traditional owners of the land.

Students decoded ancient symbols, reflected on Uncle Moogy’s cultural teachings, and marvelled at murals depicting the Tjilbruke Dreaming story which they learnt about in class.

This hands-on experience brought our classroom learning to life, engaging students with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge and histories in authentic contexts.

“I had lots of fun looking at all the different artwork, especially the Dreaming story we learnt about in class. It was cool to see the story in real life.” – Hershi

“We learnt about how the Kaurna people lived and how it is so different to now.” – Taylor

“I enjoyed sitting in front of the Uncle Moogy mural and thinking about someone in my life who has taught me valuable lessons like him.” – Abigail

“It was interesting to discover that the Aboriginal flag was flown for the first time in Victoria Square.” Anayah
