Young Creators and Curious Scientists

We are so lucky at SAC to be in the heart of the city, and to explore and learn about our world through real-life experiences that spark curiosity and deepen our understanding. This has been demonstrated beautifully over the past few weeks for our Year 3 students through two class excursions.

A visit to the Art Gallery of South Australia allowed students to learn about First Nations perspectives. As they engaged with both traditional and contemporary works, students deepened their understanding of how art can communicate knowledge, history, and meaning. During the workshop, students created their own pieces of wearable art, inspired by the colours, patterns, and ideas they had explored. This hands-on experience allowed them to reflect on their learning creatively and respectfully, transforming the insights gained in the learning from the gallery and classroom into meaningful artistic expression.

Year 3 students also ventured to the South Australian Museum, where they explored rocks, minerals, and fossils up close. Students were excited to see minerals of all colours and types, including the shimmering beauty of opals, the vibrant purple of amethyst, and the metallic sheen of graphite. They were able to handle real specimens and investigate how fossils provide clues about what life on Earth looked like millions of years ago. This hands-on experience brought our Science learning to life, inspiring inquiry, observation, and a deep sense of wonder.

Together, these excursions highlight the incredible learning opportunities that come from being immersed in our vibrant city environment. By stepping into these cultural and scientific spaces, students strengthen their understanding of the world and their place within it.
