A Place to Begin

A child’s first day at school is one of those milestones parents never forget. At St Aloysius College, the new Dunlevie Primary Building, which opened its doors to students in Term 3, has been created with those early years firmly in mind.

Those first years of school aren’t only about learning to read and write. They’re the years children discover that school can be a place where they’re part of an encouraging community, and excited to come back each morning.

This August, St Aloysius College celebrates the official opening of the Dunlevie Primary Building, a purpose-built home for its primary years in the heart of Adelaide’s CBD.

The College’s Head of Primary, Abby Matte, says every decision came back to one simple question: “How can we create a place where children feel most comfortable in their learning and curious about the world beyond?”

“We wanted every space to spark curiosity while ensuring children feel known, safe and connected from their very first day,” she says.

Inside are flexible classrooms, dedicated STEM and Arts spaces, quiet sensory areas and a rooftop play space overlooking the city. Students also played an important role in the planning process, working alongside teachers and architects to share what helps them feel productive, engaged and ready to learn.

“The new building is absolutely beautiful and so inviting! My daughter is even more excited to go to school every day and comes home happily telling us all about the new spaces and features,” says primary parent, Helena.

“It’s clear that the school has really listened to the students and designed a beautiful, comfortable space around their needs.”

Named after former Principal, Sister Teresa Dunlevie RSM, the building honours more than 145 years of Mercy education while looking ahead to the needs of today’s learners.

For many children, the Dunlevie Primary Building will be where school begins. St Aloysius College hopes it will also be the place where confidence grows and a love of learning develops.
