A City School with a World View

At St Aloysius College, stepping outside the classroom doesn’t mean leaving learning behind.

Being a city school means Adelaide becomes part of everyday life.

A brief walk, tram or bus ride might take Reception students to Adelaide Zoo, Year 4 classes to the Central Market or older students to Parliament House, the Art Gallery of South Australia or one of the city’s many festivals. Lessons that begin in the classroom often continue somewhere unexpected.

The College’s location also means students regularly use nearby sporting facilities, parklands and performance venues, while the new Dunlevie Primary Building adds rooftop play spaces and flexible learning areas designed for younger children.

These experiences help students see ideas come to life. A history lesson feels different when you’re standing in front of a heritage building. Science becomes more memorable when you’ve spent the morning observing animals at the zoo. The city gives teachers opportunities that simply aren’t possible in many other locations.

For younger children, there’s another benefit. They become familiar with the place they’ll grow up in. They learn to navigate the city with confidence, recognise its landmarks, its diverse community, and begin to understand that it’s a place where they belong. At St Aloysius College, the classroom doesn’t end at the school gate; in fact, that’s where it all begins. Sometimes, the best lesson of the daystarts with a short walk.
